Blog

With so many fantastic characters being the SCC portfolio, we thought it only fair to have a blog keeping you up to date with all our antics! Starting with Tony Dyer, husband to Rose, father to Michael (Borana), Fuzz (Manda Bay), Martin and Charlie (both farmers), who himself is an ex hunter and safari guide, and now lives in blissful retirement on Borana Ranch. Thoughts from Tony's verandah is inspiring, thought provoking, and never dull!

The Borana Mobile Clinic goes out from Borana daily to different communities in the area, to help them with health issues. I shadowed them when I was last up there, and compiled a little blog with lots of images, to show all the great work they are doing!
With many of our guests looking for a more active safari, Borana is the perfect destination. With a new store for their seven mountain bikes, Borana has good equipment for cycling, but more than that - the landscape is just perfect for some exercise. It can be challenging (if you want it to be) or, if like me you prefer to call yourself a 'fair weather cyclist', there are also great routes that don't involve quite so many hills...
Thoughts from Tony's verandah are insightful observations sent to us by Tony Dyer, father to Michael and Fuzz, and long term conservationist. These thoughts were written in December 2011, but Tony was only able to give them to us a few days ago when Juliet rode to see them from Borana Lodge. In this entry, Tony talks about the benefits of exclusion zones on the ranch, as well as the success of the elephant corridor and the naming of Tony the elephant!
The Borana team went to Sosian Lodge in West Laikipia last week to do a fantastic First Aiders Course with Rupert from ExMed and learned to deal with many different situations...
Juliet travels to Manda Bay for a few days to see what is happening and how things are in Lamu at the moment...
Michael and Nicky Dyer, owners of Borana Ranch, travelled to Rwanda last week for the most incredible gorilla experience. Here, they share some of their photographs from a very rainy but extremely exciting experience, up close with a huge family of gorillas.
SCC Kenya supports the Mt Kenya Trust, an organization that has been instrumental in creating the elephant underpass which now provides a link for elephants from two different habitats, and a safe way to cross between them. Read about the corridor and underpass here...
Rutundu beckoned. It's an annual escape to a part of Kenya that demands total and willing separation from the rest of the world. Phone reception dies soon after the turn off from the main road, and it's just you, the mountain breeze and an astonishing, ever-changing environment as you climb higher up the mountain.
Shelly and Juliet walked with camels in some of Kenya's wildest and less explored country; with the famous Helen Dufresne, woman of the north and incredible explorer, and her partner Pete Ilsley. Fuzz and Bimbi were also on a recent camel safari, read our blogs here!
The flying safari is an ultimate luxury - you get to go where you want to go, when you want to go. SCC Kenya has a huge number of options for flying safaris, as well as scenic flights around the country including in the world renowned Masai Mara.
Juliet and Shelly visited Lemarti's Camp in April 2011, and had an amazing time - here is their blog and thoughts; have a read to get a real feel for the experience on offer at this magical place.
In this blog, we talk about two of SCC's education projects - one on the coast at Manda Bay, and another closer to our headquarters at Wilson Airport.
the beautiful new Hogmead makes it's debut...
Conservation at it's most creative: eight endangered Rothschild giraffe are taken by boat to a new home in the Ruko Game Conservancy - congratulations to all who were involved in this incredible move.
Tony and Rose Dyer live on Borana Ranch - Rose's father Will Powys acquired Borana Ranch in the 1920s. Tony was a professional hunter in the days when it was permitted, and is now retired on Borana Ranch, as the patriarch of the Dyer family, and sage advisor to many.
