Borana Lodge

EXPERIENCE BORANA...

Borana is one of East Africa's original fully hosted, family-owned eco-lodge. It is located within the vast area of the Ewaso ecosystem on the Laikipia Plateau: snow-tipped peaks and the glaciers of Mount Kenya to the south; a panorama of mountains and desert to the north, Borana provides an idyllic setting for any African experience. Home to the Dyer family for three generations, the ranch - 17 miles north of the equator and 6,000 feet above sea level - is free from the malarial mosquito and the nights are cool. Laikipia is an area of exceptional beauty; and enjoys some of Kenya's most prolific wildlife (second only to the world famous Masai Mara) as well as the highest populations of endangered species in the country.

Borana is famous for its horse riding adventures, but exploring the surrounding bush in landrovers is equally exciting with our intrepid and experienced guides. Sam and Amory lead walks on the ranch, and for the more active, moutain bike rides down the escarpment offer an adrenalin rush. The ranch is perfect for picnics, sundowners on Pride Rock (the original inspiration for Disney's Lion King), and bush dinners. Some guests like to breakfast with Rose and Tony Dyer, which is a fascinating opportunity to get an insight into the Dyer family legacy to Kenya. Alternatively, a day with Michael Dyer offers the chance to understand the challenge of estbalishing a balance between wildlife management and cattle ranching! We also recommend a visit to Kisima, where Michael's brothers Martin and Charlie farm roses, sheep and wheat. On your return to the lodge, a relaxing massage is on offer in the comfort and privacy of your room.
