Wild Frontiers Camel Safaris

Helen Douglas Dufresne has been operating these camel safaris for 25 years. She is a colourful Kenyan and renowned conservationist who has walked the length and breadth of this part of northern Kenya. Her knowledge of the flora and fauna in the areas in which you will walk is unsurpassed, and her deep understanding of the Samburu traditions will lend a new dimension to your safari experience.

Safaris start from a location in Northern Kenya depending on what the guests preferences are, and walk from there to the next destination – usually determined by where the airstrips are in order that a drop off and collection can be arranged accordingly.

Depending on the fitness and ability of guests, the walk may go into the hills of the Matthews and Ndoto mountain ranges, or it may stick with lower ground, however on all safaris there is a great deal of walking and guests need to be reasonably fit.

Wild Frontiers is closely associated with The Milgis Trust, which was started to sustain the wildlife, habitat and pastoral peoples’ way of life in Northern Kenya within the drainage area of the Matthews Range, Ndoto Mountains and Kirisia Hills. Mama Helen, as she is known by the Samburu, runs the trust on ground level and is trusted more than any other in the region having worked hard to create a wonderful rapport and understanding with the communities, elders and warriors.  During your safari you will learn more about the fragile balance, and how attitudes towards wildlife and environments have changed since Helen has been in the area.

For adventurous travellers who want to get well off the beaten track and enjoy a walking holiday in some of Kenya’s most beautiful terrain, Wild Frontiers Camel Safaris are the ideal choice.  These walking safaris take you into areas where very few people have been before you, and expose you to the truly nomadic lifestyle of the Northern tribes.
